Afro-Cuban ceremonial chants as sung by the great akpwon Lazaro Ros, accompanied by the traditional bata drums. This album is a dedication to the orisha Elegua, the mischievous child-messenger who opens the gates, rules the crossroads and without whom no ceremony can begin, sung in their original Yoruban in the nasal style that Lazaro Ros learned as a child from the elders who had brought their traditions of their ancestors with them to Cuba.
| Hauntingly beautiful, Paracumbe presents the Afro-Puerto Rican traditions of bomba and plena in their purest forms. This group gathered fragments of the traditional songs from the black elders of the mountains of Puerto Rico and brought them to life with artistry and respect. The barrilles drums and the beautiful voice of Nellie Robles Lebron set off depictions of rural life and family.

Being a mariachi in Mexico City can be a tough and dangerous occupation but the venerable women of Las Pioneras de Mexico have been singing and playing in cantinas and fiestas since the 1950's. Maria Del Carmen has lived her entire life on the edge of Plaza Garibaldi, mariachi's Mexico City capitol. These women bring the classic rancheras and mariachi arrangements to life in an authentic and profound way.
